What the G2 test covers

Roughly 20 minutes on the streets around the test centre, scored continuously from the moment you pull out of the lot.

The full G test includes 400-series highway driving. From Newmarket that means Hwy 404 - entry, merging, lane changes at speed and exits, plus the town driving either side of it.

04 · The important part

Where students most often lose marks

Almost nobody fails for something dramatic. They fail on observation, hesitation, and small habits an examiner can see in the first two minutes. Every one of these is fixable in a lesson or two.

These aren't specific to Newmarket. They're what Igor sees at every test centre.

  • Rushing the first stop sign.

    The first stop is often close to the start, and nerves make people roll it. Wait. Check properly. Let traffic go.

  • Turning left on a yellow arrow.

    If you miss the advance green and it turns yellow, you must stop in the intersection and let oncoming traffic clear. Drivers who go anyway fail immediately. This is one of the most common automatic fails there is.

  • Changing lanes too late.

    A lane change made at the last moment is unsafe whether or not you complete it.

  • Reverse parking under stress.

    Usually not a weak skill - a skill that deserts people when they're nervous.

What to bring on test day

  • Your licence - the physical card, not a photo of it
  • Your booking confirmation
  • Glasses or contacts if your licence says you need them
  • A car that is insured, plated and mechanically sound - working signals, brake lights, horn, wipers, and a clean windshield
  • For a G2 candidate: a fully licensed driver to take the car home if the test doesn't go your way
  • Time to arrive early. Rushing in is the worst way to start

Using Igor's car for the test

Several lesson packages include use of Igor's dual-control car for the test itself, which means you test in the car you learned in. DriveTest's own test fee is paid separately to DriveTest.
